Some further information for future staff:
The food service business is HARD and it takes people with a real passion for the work, a strong work ethic, and a lot of energy in order to make it a lasting career. Most people who begin in the business don’t make it- they can’t handle the hours, the physical demands, and the stress of customer service (some folks assume if you’re serving food it’s because you’re unqualified for anything else). It takes a very special person to find contentment in this industry and we at Muddy’s are very choosy about whom we hire.
Benefits: we are a small business trying to improve the benefits we can offer. We currently participate in the Church Health Center Memphis Plan for health coverage. We are closed on Sundays and you will never be asked to work on that day (during peak seasons we do offer completely optional shifts on Sunday afternoons to do miscellaneous prep work if you wish to supplement your income). We are closed Thanksgiving weekend, the week after Christmas, and a week in the summer in order to allow designated time for staff to take vacations, spend holiday time with family, etc. We are beginning a pilot profit-share program in January 2011. We hope to increase the benefits we can offer to staff, but in order to do so we need our staff to be committed to excellence and frugal in expenses so that we can build these things into the budget. It is a team effort!
It’s Harder Than It Looks: I may be beating a dead horse here, but I really can’t stress this enough. We get so many applicants who think “oh, it’d be so FUN to make cupcakes all day!” and it just isn’t that easy. While we do have a lot of fun at work, there is no standing around and slow people get weeded out. No one “oh-isn’t-this-fun” ices cupcakes… they “go go go” ice a thousand cupcakes (while the person standing next to them does the same). We make thousands of cupcakes each day, plus hundreds of cookies, and loads of pies, cakes, etc and each staffer is expected to contribute a fair share to keep the baked goods coming. I don’t say any of this to be discouraging, but anyone who applies to work in the bakery needs to know the Real Deal and the workload involved. It is fast-paced and stressful. We do have fun though, really.
