sexy V Day poem

February 14th, 2010

Ok Mom and Dad, cover up Bobby and Sally’s precious eyes; this is one for the grown-ups.  One of our lovely customers, Beth, sent us this poem she wrote, inspired by a Capote cupcake!  Thanks for allowing us to share it!

sex with a cupcake

I flirted with you
from behind the glass
stealing glances
licking my lips in anticipation

once I got you home
I took a long loving look
so delicate
your nonpareils sprinkled about
the surface like jewelry

I gently lifted your pleated paper skirt
I teased you with my tongue
licking just the tip of the icing
the sweetness
the richness
the texture on my tongue
so smooth and creamy

ah, the first bite was heavenly
I savored it
letting the flavor linger
in my mouth
sucking the icing through my teeth

but then hunger took hold
I opened wider
bit harder
consuming you
in a fog of sugar and butter

but then quickly
ah, too quickly
you were gone
and now I am left with just
the perfect memory
and the taste of you
still fresh on my mind

as I contemplate another…

Woohoo, let’s hear it for Beth’s poetic chops!  *snaps* Our Capotes are blushing and asked me to tell you they’re wonderfully flattered and swept off their feet.  :)

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!

fail

February 13th, 2010

I've got pie on my face

I just botched a customer service pickle.  “Laura” was irked that she had to wait in line to pay for and pick up her pre-order, then called me later to discuss her experience.

My severe lack of sleep and imminent overnight bake-a-thon were obviously sabotaging my mental reflexes; I got defensive (egads!  worst possible reaction and classic error) and instead of asking her what would fix her problem, I just kept explaining WHY we do things the way we do them (when obviously she doesn’t care why we do things because she thinks we’re awful). Classic rookie blunder and I can’t believe I made it.

I’ll use this as an example of “what not to do” for my staff at our Monday meeting, but decided to also share it with all of you as a mass confession.  Hopefully the humiliation will prevent me from doing something boneheaded like this again.
Thanks for listening.

And for “Laura”, wherever you are, I’m sorry I handled this so badly.

no more pre-orders for V Day

February 11th, 2010

“I’ve never said the words I’m sorry*so many times in one day!”  -Elizabeth referring to her tour on phone duty today

*as in “I’m sorry, but all slots for pre-order on Saturday are taken

Sorry y’all, but we can’t commit to any more pre-orders for Saturday, Feb 13 despite our staying and baking overnight… it’s gonna have to be first come, first serve!  Oh the humanity!

guessing game

February 11th, 2010

Step right up and make your guess!

This past Saturday night I guessed how many cupcakes we’d sold that day and when we checked the register report I was only 5 cupcakes off!  I was elated and euphoric at my amazing guessing skills!  So obviously, we thought we’d share the joy and let YOU guess.

So, we’re asking you to guess how many cupcakes you think we’ll sell on Saturday February 13 (just cupcakes- doesn’t include cookies, pies, etc).  The person who guesses the closest will win a Muddy’s tee of their choice.  To play, enter your guess with the cashier at the bakery; no purchase necessary.

the biz: saying “no” to growth

February 9th, 2010

I’ve been reading a lot lately.  Nope, not the relaxing tomes I promised myself would make a re-appearance in my life for 2010 (hey, I’ve still got 10 more months to make that a reality!); I’ve been reading tons of business blogs.  Specifically, I’ve been trying to find guidance from others in the same boat I find myself.
Many are calling for Muddy’s expansion… everything from opening earlier,  opening every day to more locations, franchising (not gonna happen y’all), etc, but I can’t help but feel that in doing so this business would lose what’s at the heart and soul of it, what those people really identify with and why they love us.

I recently found this blog post on the New York Times website and was intrigued, especially by the variety of comments readers posted.  It seems there are some notable differences between this place and Muddy’s, but I’m definitely interested by the variety of comments and overall theme.  What do you think?

nothing says romance like VD

February 2nd, 2010

*updated Feb 11 at 5pm: all pre-order slots are booked, so it’s first come first serve on Saturday!

Hello darlings, it’s VD time again at Muddy’s!  To what do I refer?  A wicked pestilence?  Kind of… everyone has an opinion about Valentine’s Day and I firmly fall into the camp of “made up holiday of forced affection”.

Thus, we will be continuing the Muddy’s tradition of the two-faced Valentine’s Day: half our products will be for you lovey dovey shmoopikins celebrating your luuurv and the other half will be for those of you celebrating being single or like me, happily coupled but just icked out by the shmoopiness on VDay.
