Yay!  Look what one of my employees, Lucinda, got for me!!!

img_0636

I arrived yesterday morning and found this adorable mat on my desk.

Some have asked “what’s up with the gnomes?  Does Kat have a weird obsession or something?”  The answer is no, I do not have a weird obsession.  I just like them; they’re cheerful, mischievous, and funny.  The gnome thing actually got started about 6 or 7 years ago when I impulse-bought a bunch of them at a garage sale.  The intent was to find more and then go “gnome” my brother Kip’s front yard,  but I never got enough for the project.  In the meantime, they’d made themselves at home at my place.  Then I started using them as the hosts for my Christmas parties… they even kidnapped Santa one year and the invitation was a ransom note from the gnomes.  :)

Anyway, the gnome mat is a fun addition to the shop’s decor- a big THANK YOU to Lucinda!!!

magical mystery tour: Atlanta… the winner!

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

atlanta-cupcake-factory-21Oops!  I had this post for the finale of the Atlanta bakery tour and forgot to post it… my apologies!

Mom and I took our loot back to my cousin Stewart’s house (the Fourmy/Bond/Gordon club headquarters for the weekend) so the whole group could partake of the goodies and ‘taste-test’ the cookies, cupcakes, and scones from three of Atlanta’s bakeries.  We devastated the entire stash… about a pound of cookies, 3 scones, and 15 or so cupcakes.  We compared textures, flavors, and yumminess in general.  Everyone loved the mini-cookies from Alon’s, the favorite from Chocolate Pink was by far the pink lemonade, and as for everyone’s favorites from Atlanta Cupcake Factory…  EVERYTHING.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have our winner… Atlanta Cupcake Factory scored the highest on the family taste-test as well as the highest on my own ‘bakery visit as an experience’ customer service test and ‘place I’d like to hang out’ atmosphere test.

Congrats Atlanta Cupcake Factory… I can’t wait to visit again!   (now if only they had pie… )

getting to know: an interview

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

amanda-with-twee-cardsAmanda Wolfe is the creator and entrepreneur behind Twee Cards, those wry and funny greeting cards that have been selling like hotcakes in the bakery.  Here’ s a little inside look to her world!

1. Your name

Amanda Wolfe

2. Your business /hobby

TweeCards (Handmade paper goodness like greetings and stationery, plus a few other crafty bits.)

3. What do you like best about your business/hobby?

It’s thrilling that people like my cards enough to share them with a friend or loved one on a special occasion. Mailing a card is a big gesture, in our tech-saturated world! I also usually write my cards with people in my life in mind, so of course they love them. But the surprise and delight is that people (who aren’t acquainted with my personal brand of crazy) like my cards too!

4. How and when did you start in your business/hobby?

I’ve always been designing, but TweeCards was born in February. I had made some cool typeface calendars as Christmas gifts, and after that everyone was telling me I should sell my designs-but I never really took it seriously. I’d like to say that something really interesting and compelling finally made me take the leap (it’d make a much better story). But in reality, I was on the elevator one day and just up and decided to go for it. Little did I know how much goes into starting your own business! But it was worth it. It took me a few months to get all my ducks in a row, and my shop officially opened in April.

5. Whom do you most admire and why?

My mom. She had ovarian cancer last year and I am continually inspired by her strength and amazing attitude. She worked right through her chemo treatments! We’re actually going to work on a few chemo cards together, because I’d love to share her outlook cupcakes-and-prezzieswith people who really need a smile. (And part of the proceeds will benefit ovarian cancer research.)

6. Your favorite dessert?

Cupcakes! Specifically, any kind with cream-cheesy icing. Yum. And actually, I have a soft spot for old school puppy chow (you know, where you shake Chex, peanut butter, chocolate, and powdered sugar in a big paper bag) but I can definitely only make that once a year. Danger.

7. Three things that make you happy:

Sunshine, DVD special features, new craft supplies

8. Any other details about you or your business/hobby that you feel like sharing:

I grew up doing all kinds of arts and crafts-from sewing to design to handmade paper to homemade lipstick. But after college I moved to New York and was all busy with my grown-up job and had basically stopped crafting and working with my hands. I didn’t realize how much I missed it until last winter, when I decided to make dozens of hand-stitched, hand-beaded felt ornaments on a bit of a whim (apparently, I have a weird craft impulse thing). Anyhow! From there I rediscovered knitting, embroidery, and finally, card-making. Just sharing this little reminder to remember the things that make you happy and try to do them, even if it’s just as a hobby!

If you are interested in making a career at Muddy’s Bake Shop, please send your resume and references to amanda(at)muddysbakeshop.com

when life hands you cap’n crunch…

Ok, so life didn’t really hand me Captain Crunch so much as I accidentally purchased Cap’n Crunch instead of Rice Krispies… the generic brands swap the colors of the two, so I just grabbed the blue box!  Zounds!

I had the butter and marshmallows already melted when I realized my grievous error and there was no way I was trekking out in the storm to get new cereal, so I thought I’d try my luck with the Rice Krispies recipe but using Cap’n Crunch.  I was going to make little rice krispy treats to dip in chocolate, but the Cap’n Crunch didn’t roll into balls very easily, so I improvised.  I shoved that sticky sugar-overload mixture into a bundt pan and pressed it into shape, then let it cool.

While the “cake” was cooling, I melted 4 ounces of semi-sweet chocolate on the stove.  When chocolate was melted, I turned out the “cake” onto the stand and then drizzled chocolate all ove the top, then added some sprinkles on top of the chocolate.

I’m not going to say this is the best dessert I’ve ever made, because it’s definitely not!  However, it’s really easy, has only five ingredients, tastes like sugar, and doesn’t involve much wait time so it’s probably a pretty good activity to do on a rainy day with kids.  I’m definitely going to keep this in the repertoire for when the nieces and nephews come visit, but I’ll probably use rice krispies… the Cap’n Crunch is just too much sugar to combine with marshmallows!

birthday craps

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

img_0566

Ok, I’m veering into personal life adventures with this post, but just bear with me as I brag a little about my truly excellent taste in men.

Today is my 28th birthday.  For my birthday, Thomas arranged twelve items (mostly in envelopes) on our coffee table.  Each item had a large numeral on it; there were also dice.  So I got to play ‘birthday craps’ for my presents (actually, I got numbers 6 and 8 when I woke up this morning… chai latte and bagel).img_0568

I got to roll the dice and open the corresponding envelope.  He had arranged an assortment of ‘real presents’ (like a dinner date and Anthropologie gift card) and funnies (like a tickle attack and a ‘cougar’ postcard he made… I’m all of 28 days older).  He is so creative and I had so much fun.   Also, I highly recommend birthday craps to anyone; what a great way to open presents and celebrate a birthday!  Thanks  T!!!

Yippee skippee!fox-13-cupcakes

I got to go on Fox 13 WHBQ’s morning show this morning and chat with Valerie Calhoun about cupcakes as an alternative to wedding cakes. Huzzah!

Valerie is super-nice and the whole crew was really fun. I got to nosh some sweet baked goods for my morning sugar rush with Valerie, Curtis, and Leon and crew. The whole gang is so fun and I loved getting to see the news show in progress.

chocolate-pink

The last bakery we visited was Chocolate Pink Pastry Cafe, located on Juniper Street.  This place is super-slick and trendy and seems more like a martini bar than a bakery!

Chocolate Pink had cupcakes, cakes, tarts, and some cookies individually packaged.  They also sell gourmet chocolate bars and espresso drinks.  We got one of each cupcake flavor they had available: coconut, red velvet, strawberry lemonade, carrot, cookies and cream, caramel apple.  My favorite, by far, was the strawberry lemonade.
