customer service position

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

We have an open position at the bakery!  I’d like to really stress that we’re only considering mature, long-term candidates.  Also, it’s a very fast-paced aerobic job with a lot of bending and lifting, so definitely keep that in mind.
Thanks!

summer’s greatest hits

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

IMG_0465It’s official, summer is over and now it’s autumn.  However, when has Memphis followed the official rules?  As we wrap up our delightful summer, I’d like to take a moment to remember my favorite summer-things:

1. watermelon… pure deliciousness AND hydrating!
2. lightening bugs… the official herald of summer
3. tomatoes… oh, I could write for days about how much I love tomatoes
4. fresh cut grass… I love that smell!
5. Memphis heat… we complain about it,  but deep down we’re super-proud of our ability to survive it.
6. summer pies… blueberries, and blackberries, and peaches oh my!
7. farmers’ markets
8. fresh basil
9. summer camp (ok that was when I was littler, but I still think it’s great!)
10. did I already mention tomatoes?  :)

What are your favorite summer things?  And how about what you look forward to with autumn?

booked means booked

Friday, September 25th, 2009

When we say we’re booked it means we couldn’t take an order from the President.  Or my mom.  Or Colin Firth (although that would really depress me).

“Booked” is trade lingo that means “all 24 hours of that day are allocated to baking for the bakery case and for people who got their orders in before now”  It also means we are unable to:
a) manipulate time to create a 25th hour for more baking
b) call another customer and tell her that YOUR order is more important than her order, so we’re taking yours instead
c) bribe or threaten our ovens into cooking things faster (that’s the inherent problem with inanimate objects).

Seriously, please don’t threaten my employees, talk down to them (it’s rude), try to bribe them, name-drop (especially my name, it’s embarrassing), beg, or throw a tantrum.

We are in the business of selling baked goods, so seriously, we take as many orders as we can- we’ve got bills to pay too!  I promise, we don’t secretly keep some slots open in case someone Really Important calls at the last minute.  We simply take orders until we can’t take any more.   Please be nice!

THANK YOU!!!

Jayne Bond by Clare Torina

Jayne Bond by Clare Torina

Clare Torina painted the super-awesome portrait of Jayne Bond (aka Muddy) that is the centerpiece of the bakery wall.  This super-talented artist has been featured on ArtsMemphis tv and you can check out her video RIGHT HERE.

Clare does lots of paintings that spring from her own mind but is also available for portraits; she’s incredibly gifted with color and mood and I personally vouch for her being awesome to work with.  She was able to create a huge color portrait of Muddy from just a 4×6 black and white photograph.

Also, in case you haven’t heard, ArtsMemphis has just launched an iPhone app that enables you to find all kinds of arts events in Memphis on your phone.  Pretty sweet!

dawn is the MOST

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

dawnFirstly, thanks to EVERYONE who brought us copies of the Memphis Most insert.  Since all our families wanted copies too, they really came in handy!

A very special shout out to Dawn, one of our amazing regulars.  Dawn brings her kids in for treats after school and also comes with friends on the weekends.  Sometimes she even comes alone to hang out, relax, and just have fun.  She’s even helped my mom fold bakery boxes on a Saturday night!  She is one of those special people that has a smile for everyone and collects friends wherever she goes.

Anyway, the week after  Memphis Most came out, she strolled into the bakery with a little present for us… a framed copy of the cover!  That SHE framed!  Herself!  It’s so cool and it not only made our day super-awesome, but every time I look at it I just feel like someone gave me a hug.  Thanks Dawn!!!

calling all lumberjacks!

Friday, September 11th, 2009

Ok y’all thanks so much for the help a few weeks ago on narrowing down some color options for the (coming soon) lumberjack tees.  These were the top two color combos people were suggesting, so I’d like your opinion on which one is the winner.

Please comment below and let me know if you like the green shirt or the heather shirt!  Thanks!

always something…

JollyRogerSkull+Crossbones_400x400Sigh.  One of our ovens is out of commission.  Again.  On a Friday.  Yeah…

I can’t WAIT for when we’ve saved enough to get some real commercial-strength ovens that can keep up with us.

In the meantime, please bear with us as we try to push a large volume of treats out of 2/3 of our normal baking capacity of ovens.  In unrelated news (yeah right) the Underground is almost ready, so there’s that.  Huzzah!
