I love that so many of y’all have really gotten creative- we have submissions in all colors, slogans, images, etc.  Some of y’all are going a sophisticated route, some are letting their wit shine, and some are really thinking outside the cupcake.  I love it all!

two of the fantastic greeting cards

two of the fantastic greeting cards

Our newest greeting cards are from Sycamore Street Press and they are fabulous!

Kirk and Eva Jorgensen have such wit and each card is a reflection of their sense of humor and enthusiasm for their product.  We’re super-lucky to have a great selection of their greeting cards available at Muddy’s and we’re so excited to share their work with Memphis!

Now, seven questions with Kirk!

1. Your name…  Kirk Jorgensen

2. Your business /hobby…   Sycamore Street Press

3. What do you like best about your business/hobby?…  Working everyday with my wife Eva.

4. How and when did you start in your business/hobby?…  Eva started the business when I was finishing a MA at Ohio State in 2007. Once I finished my degree, I jumped aboard full time.

5. Whom do you most admire and why?…  I really admire Joey Ramone. I think he was a brilliant song writer and great person in general.

6. Your favorite dessert?…  Any kind of cobblers.

7. Three things that make you happy:  Riding my bike.  Playing music.  Eva.

Thanks Kirk!  And y’all definitely come and check out their cards!

our oven ain't big enough for our lovin' !!!

our lovin' is too big for our oven!!!!

Ok, I actually commented on my own blog post read my lips but afterward I thought, “you know, this really should be its own post” so here it is…

I’ve gotten a lot of feedback on this post (and not opening in Midtown in general) on the blog, by email, in person, etc. and obviously I’ve done a poor job of explaining to you, our lovely loyal and kick-a customers, exactly WHY we aren’t going to be selling out of this kitchen.  So here goes…  (deep breath!)

The real issues are supply and time (and sanity).
The reason we set up The Underground is because we can’t physically make enough product at the kitchen on Sanderlin, even baking 24 hours a day, and we need this 2nd kitchen to help supply the bakery and fill pre-orders.
Also, while I LOVE LOVE LOVE my job and wouldn’t trade it for another, my first 5 months I worked 18-24 hours EVERY day (that’s minimum 126 hours a week, folks) and now that I’ve cut back to 80 hours a week I’ve gotten spoiled by getting to see my family occasionally!

In order to open another shop, I have to make sure that we CAN produce enough goods to help out at Sanderlin AND support that location… and that I can personally handle the strain and responsibilities of another bakery.  And by “I”, I mean not only myself, but my employees and my family.  Imagine if you were already working 80 hours a week and told your spouse you were going to expand your business and work MORE (when you’ve been promising for over a year to work less)… yeah.
If we open up another shop and find we have the same problem (can’t bake enough product) as at Sanderlin or I just can’t handle it, I can’t just change my mind and close the doors- people’s jobs and livelihoods would be at stake, and more.
So in food-speak, we have to take one bite at a time… and remember to chew before taking another bite!

I hope this clears up any questions, but really, I love the involvement and I want y’all to let me know what you think.  One of the things I LOVE about my business is that it has so much input from and owes so much to its customers, so definitely keep it coming!  :)

fat talk

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

Ok, I’m a little late on this as I meant to post it last week (during the actual “end fat-talk week”) but it’s relevant any time, any place…

This campaign is near and dear to my heart not only as a Tri-Delta alumna (yay Tri-Delta for spearheading this campaign!) but also as a woman with an undeniably skewed body-image.  I had an eating disorder in college and was definitely way thinner than I should’ve been, yet when I looked in the mirror I saw fat fat fat.  I like to think this is behind me, but even now I’ll catch myself critiquing every ounce and fretting that my thighs aren’t what they used to be while Thomas groans and says “you CAN’T be serious!”
And I know I’m not the only one… women young and old, heavy and thin, rich and poor all have to deal with this issue in themselves, their friends, and their families.

Check out the video and remember to cut back on the fat-talk!  :)

Read_my_lips.jpeg…no new location!

We HAVE been working on “the Underground” which is a “secret” baking ONLY facility in Midtown.

We are not moving.  We are not opening another shop.  This is a smallish kitchen that simply exists to help us make more cookies, cakes, etc.  We’ve been booking up literally weeks in advance for months and while most people are relatively nice about it, it still was a situation that needed to be addressed… hence, the Underground.  The rumor is out of control and no fewer than ten people a day ask about it, so I wanted make a public statement!

I hope this clears up any confusion!  :)

trick or treat!

Sunday, October 11th, 2009

We will have a few special treats available the week of Halloween and in order for y’all to be able to pre-order and make your plans, we thought we should post our flavor selections for that week here on our blog!

Since Halloween is on a Saturday, we figured y’all probably won’t need Halloween-y stuff Tuesday and Wednesday, so those two days will have their own menu.  The flavors below are for Thursday October 29-Saturday October 31.

Featured Cupcakes:
prozac… with orange and green sprinkles
plain jane… iced in orange, white, purple, and green with Halloween sprinkles
capote… with Halloween sprinkles
frankly scarlett… with Halloween toppers
pumpkin d’light… pumpkin spice cake with cream cheese icing and Halloween toppers
candy corn… orange cupcake with lemon and vanilla icing
frankenstein… chocolate cupcake with green mint icing and purple sprinkles
ghostbusters… chocolate cupcake with cream cheese icing and orange-colored coconut

Featured cookies:
chocolate chip cookies
toffee bars
peanut butter cookies
sugar cookies (with Halloween color sugar)
brownies with chocolate topping and Halloween sprinkles
oatmeal raisin cookies

As usual, cake and pie is sold by the slice and the flavors are chef’s choice!

bumper sticker CONTEST!

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

win this pie whiteA bunch of y’all keep asking for Muddy’s bumper stickers so I’ve been trying to come up with a good one.  Sadly, my design skills seem to be sadly lacking.  Sooooo, it’s up to YOU!  Yes, you.

During the month of October we will be accepting submissions for a bumper sticker design.  The winning designer will receive:
- five free stickers
- a dozen cupcakes (the menu flavor of your choice or a mixed dozen)
- a pie (choose between Shady Wake, Kick in the Pants, Punkin’, and Nancy’s Boy)
- bragging rights  :)

Here are things to keep in mind when making your design, rules, etc:
- these should be stickers YOU want to use, not necessarily something designed just to “advertise” the business (y’all know how we feel about advertising…), so let your creativity run wild!
- all designs become the property of Muddy’s Bake Shop, LLC and by submitting a design you’re giving us permission to use it, duh!
- artwork/designs must be your own creation ’cause plagiarism just aint’ cool.
- there are two shapes available: 4×6″ Euro oval and 3×11.5″ rectangle.
- there’s no limit to the number of designs you can submit.  If you have ten great ideas, submit ten designs!
- email your electronic submissions to eat(at)muddysbakeshop.com  We will accept the following formats: vectorized image, PDF, Photoshop, Microsoft Word, jpeg.  If you’re afraid of the computer, you can mail a design to us at the bakery (Muddy’s Bake Shop re: bumper sticker  5101 Sanderlin Memphis, TN 38117)!
- please limit the number of colors used to one or two (not including white).  HERE are the colors available; if the color you use isn’t one of these it’ll be matched to the one closest to it.
- we welcome submissions from all customers regardless of age or artistic inclination!

Yay!  I look forward to seeing some cool designs!
