professor plum

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

Oh, how I love summer.  All those delicious fruits that are truly excellent eaten by themselves, but really shine when paired with a pie crust, are just irresistible to me!  Here’s an experiment I made yesterday… plum pie!  Oh my goodness, it was delicious… so delicious that we didn’t sell a single slice.  All the staff wanted to try it and somehow everyone getting one bite of a slice just didn’t quite cut it; we ate the whole thing.  Thomas was lucky to get some.

Here’s a photo he took last night (we heated ours up and scooped some ice cream on it)…

No worries, I’ll definitely make this again!  I’ll try to remember to post on facebook and twitter when I do.

business for sale

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

Ok y’all, this is a desperate plea for a fellow local business…

Kip and I went to Colco Fine Woods & Tools yesterday to get supplies for a project we’re doing in the bakery.  He got the word from a buddy that this is THE place to go for real quality wood for a variety of projects… the craftsman’s wood-candyland, if you will.
This place was amazing.  Seemingly miles of GORGEOUS wood planks- varieties I’ve never even heard of!  I’m not a woodworker by any means, but I couldn’t stop myself from reaching out to run my hand along each display and marvel at the amazing variety.  The men who work there really know their stuff and are so willing to share their knowledge about the craft and the wood.

Here’s the plea… someone needs to buy the company.  The owner has passed away; his wife is very elderly, his children aren’t interested in keeping the business going.  This is a great little business and with a little retail therapy could really offer a unique buying experience to the growing number of craftspeople in GenX/Y and beyond.  Once I got over marveling at all the varieties of wood, I couldn’t help but envision a cool paint job, an area with how-to manuals and magazines like ReadyMade for sale, a forest mural on the warehouse wall, flooring to complement the product, in-house workshops where folks can learn the craft (and buy the supplies)…  someone could really turn this into a (more) awesome spot.

Sooooo, if you know someone looking to buy a small business with a built-in knowledgeable staff please let them know about Colco!!!  And if you’re in the market for quality wood, stop in and check it out… while you still can!

Whoooo!  Melly K over at Cute Stew put together this awesome push for eating and shopping locally!

She’ll be posting ‘prompts’ for what to eat/buy locally each week and then we’re all encouraged to blog about it.  She got the inspiration from Thomas over at Eat Local Memphis and I think she’s getting a lot of cool participation.

For more info, check out her blog post here.

blueberry recipe!

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

by Karen (register maven on Wed, Fri, and Sat nights!)

My friend Gloria doesn’t bake. So when she passed along this Blueberry Poppy Seed Brunch Cake recipe I knew it would be good.  The first time I made this recipe, Gloria provided the poppy seeds…this wasn’t something that I kept in my kitchen.  If the recipe sounds good to you, mention it to me (Karen) next time you see me at Muddy’s and I will provide the poppy seeds*.  Gloria says, “Go pick the blueberries yourself!” Or maybe you can pick them up at the Memphis Farmer’s Market.

*for poppy seeds, you need to ask Karen (at the bakery on Wed, Fri, and Sat nights!) as she has volunteered to bring some for anyone interested.  Thanks!

Blueberry Poppy Seed Brunch Cake

2/3 cup granulated sugar
½ cup butter
2 teaspoons grated lemon peel
1 large egg
1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons poppy seeds
½ teaspoon baking soda
¼ teaspoon salt
½ cup sour cream

FILLING
2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries (frozen should be thawed)
1/3 cup granulated sugar
2 teaspoons all-purpose flour
¼ teaspoon nutmeg

GLAZE
1/3 cup confectioner’s sugar
1 to 2 teaspoons milk

After cake is baked, combine confectioner’s sugar and milk in bowl; blend until smooth.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour bottom and sides of 9 or 10 inch round baking dish or springform pan. Beat sugar and butter in bowl until fluffy.  Add lemon peel and egg; beat at medium speed 2 minutes.  Combine flour, poppy seeds, baking soda and salt.  Add to butter mixture alternately with sour cream, beginning and ending with flour mixture.  Spread batter over bottom and 1 inch up sides of pan, so batter on all sides is ¼ inch thick.

FILLING: Combine all ingredients in medium blow.  Sprinkle over batter.

Bake 45 to 50 minutes, until cake is golden brown.  Cool slightly.  If using spring form pan, remove sides.  Drizzle top with glaze.  Serve warm or cool.  Makes 8 servings.

vacay!

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Just giving y’all a heads up… Muddy’s will be closed July 6-10 (after Independence Day!) to allow the staff a summer break.  We will not be taking pre-orders for this week, and apologize for any inconvenience.

My staff works SO HARD all year and this is work that is pretty taxing on a body.  We LOVE it, but we’re GoingGoingGoing all the time and definitely need some time to recharge our batteries.

Thanks so much for supporting me in supporting my team!
