Amanda Wolfe is the creator and entrepreneur behind Twee Cards, those wry and funny greeting cards that have been selling like hotcakes in the bakery. Here’ s a little inside look to her world!
1. Your name
Amanda Wolfe
2. Your business /hobby
TweeCards (Handmade paper goodness like greetings and stationery, plus a few other crafty bits.)
3. What do you like best about your business/hobby?
It’s thrilling that people like my cards enough to share them with a friend or loved one on a special occasion. Mailing a card is a big gesture, in our tech-saturated world! I also usually write my cards with people in my life in mind, so of course they love them. But the surprise and delight is that people (who aren’t acquainted with my personal brand of crazy) like my cards too!
4. How and when did you start in your business/hobby?
I’ve always been designing, but TweeCards was born in February. I had made some cool typeface calendars as Christmas gifts, and after that everyone was telling me I should sell my designs-but I never really took it seriously. I’d like to say that something really interesting and compelling finally made me take the leap (it’d make a much better story). But in reality, I was on the elevator one day and just up and decided to go for it. Little did I know how much goes into starting your own business! But it was worth it. It took me a few months to get all my ducks in a row, and my shop officially opened in April.
5. Whom do you most admire and why?
My mom. She had ovarian cancer last year and I am continually inspired by her strength and amazing attitude. She worked right through her chemo treatments! We’re actually going to work on a few chemo cards together, because I’d love to share her outlook
with people who really need a smile. (And part of the proceeds will benefit ovarian cancer research.)
6. Your favorite dessert?
Cupcakes! Specifically, any kind with cream-cheesy icing. Yum. And actually, I have a soft spot for old school puppy chow (you know, where you shake Chex, peanut butter, chocolate, and powdered sugar in a big paper bag) but I can definitely only make that once a year. Danger.
7. Three things that make you happy:
Sunshine, DVD special features, new craft supplies
8. Any other details about you or your business/hobby that you feel like sharing:
I grew up doing all kinds of arts and crafts-from sewing to design to handmade paper to homemade lipstick. But after college I moved to New York and was all busy with my grown-up job and had basically stopped crafting and working with my hands. I didn’t realize how much I missed it until last winter, when I decided to make dozens of hand-stitched, hand-beaded felt ornaments on a bit of a whim (apparently, I have a weird craft impulse thing). Anyhow! From there I rediscovered knitting, embroidery, and finally, card-making. Just sharing this little reminder to remember the things that make you happy and try to do them, even if it’s just as a hobby!
