Working at Muddy's

Muddy's is an artisan bakery in the heart of Memphis, TN.  We bake fresh, from scratch cookies, cupcakes, pies, cakes, and so much more and we take LOADS of pride in delivering top-notch customer service for our guests.
Everyone does a bit of everything... we all assist customers, make cookies, and wash dishes. If this kind of teamwork sounds like your jam, you're probably in the right place!  We aren't perfect and don't expect you to be.  We DO expect professionalism, enthusiasm, and a willingness to learn-- both from ourselves and from our teammates. We are proud to make great food with people we respect for a community we love.
There's no higher compliment than a job application-- thank you!
-Kat Gordon, owner
and Andrea Fortwendel, general manager

How to Apply

Step 1.  Carefully review the basic job profile HERE.  This is the "foundation job" that all staff do, so it's VERY important.

Step 2. Review the "current hiring priorities" described below.  These are the specific things we're hiring for in the current job opening (sort of an addendum to the basic job profile in step 1)

Step 3. Fill out the application HERE
***Attention to detail and ability to follow written instructions are VERY important in a bakery setting!  Incomplete applications are not considered.***

When we have open positions, we usually respond to applicants within 2 business days. If you have not heard back, check your spam filter!
Qualified candidates will be invited to a phone interview, then if we'd like to move forward, an in person interview.

For the current openings, we are looking for:

  • Long term (18+ months). The current openings are perfect for folks looking to stay at a job for a while. NO "summer jobs" available.
  • Full time or heavy part time.  The first month of training will be 35-40 hrs/week, Tue-Sat. After that, we need you at least 28 hours a week (all staff work Saturdays).
  • Love working with guests!  While all team members do a mix of baking and retail, this position will spend LOTS of their time on the retail side (assisting customers in the shop, on the treat truck, etc).  Only apply to this round if you actually WANT to work with guests.
  • Maturity, professionalism, and commitment to excellence. Our team is in a natural time of transition. We've enjoyed an astonishing amount of team stability for the last 3 years; most staff have been here 5+ years! As a few prepare for their next adventure, we want new team members ready to learn, lead, and keep the momentum going!  We're a friendly bunch, but if you're more interested in joining a social group than being part of a winning team, this is not the right time to apply.
  • Stamina & endurance.  Working in a retail bakery requires both physical and mental endurance. People who have the ability to maintain steady pace and consistent personal energy have a huge edge in this job!  Our ideal candidate can share examples of "doing the work" and stick-to-it-ness (ps. this could be past work experience or "alternative experience", such as participation in endurance sports, etc)
ps. Don't assume this is an age thing... some of the folks best at pace & endurance are over 40!  :-)

How to Ace the Interview: Some tips & tricks to make yourself stand out from the crowd!

We are all about clear expectations and transparent processes. We want to work with fantastic people AND believe in giving our team mates the information they need to succeed.

  • Be on time (or 5 min early) for interview.  If you show up late for an interview, we can only assume you'll be late to work too.
  • Dress for success. Our job can sometimes be messy, but we still want our appearance to communicate that we are professionals who take pride in ourselves, our space, and our products!  When you look like you made an effort for the interview, we feel confident that you'll show up to work looking like a pro.
  • Ask questions about the job! An interview goes two ways-- BOTH parties are trying to assess if this is a good fit. You're seriously considering spending a lot of time with us... be sure to ask the questions that will help you decide if this is for you.
